Do you actually need custom software?

An honest test for when off-the-shelf tools are enough — and the signs you’ve outgrown them.

Custom software is not automatically better. For many businesses, a well-chosen off-the-shelf tool is cheaper, faster and good enough. The real question is what the current setup is costing you.

Start with the workarounds. If your team copies the same information between tools, keeps a “real” spreadsheet next to the official system, or relies on one person who knows how everything fits together, you are paying a hidden tax every week.

Then look at growth. If every new branch, product or customer segment means hiring more people just to keep records straight, your tools are setting the ceiling on your business.

If both are true, custom software usually pays for itself. If neither is, keep what you have — and invest in growth instead.
