Building for patchy networks: what “works offline” really means

Designing for the connection your users actually have — not the office Wi-Fi.

Software is usually built on fast office internet, then used on a phone with one bar of signal. That gap is where most frustrating apps are born.

Working offline doesn’t mean everything works offline. It means deciding which actions matter most — showing a ticket, recording a sale, capturing a form — and making sure they never depend on a perfect connection.

Good offline design is also honest: it shows users what is saved, what is waiting to sync, and what has gone through.
